If you are all fingers and thumbs when it comes to wielding a needle and thread, this is definitely the DIY project for you. At stylish Eve we are always on the lookout for clever projects that don’t require the skills of a time-served craftsperson to achieve a great result. Well thanks to this great project, detailed more fully at Homey Oh My!, we are able to show you how easy it is to create a stylish looking tote bag, without having to use a needle and thread. How cool is that? We think that this would be a great way for you, or even one of your children, to gain some confidence if you like DIY but are not sure you have the skills. What’s also great is that you get to choose the style and color of the bag (if you want to cheat a little!), which means you can perfectly accessorize your outfits with one or two of these great totes.
As with many of our DIY projects at Stylish Eve, we don’t want to overwhelm you with a load of materials and tools, and we have tried our best here. The most important element is something called ‘Unique Stitch’ which is fabric glue that is as strong and durable as genuine stitching. The remainder of the items needed include canvas, a ruler, an iron, a rivet kit, an awl, faux leather handles with holes, Martha Stewart Satin Paint in Beetle Black, a pouncer and a roll of 1/8″ tape. From the pictures you will see that the most time-consuming element is creating the stripe effect on the material. Of course if you don’t have the patience of a saint, you can buy some pre-patterned canvas instead – we’re not going to tell anyone! However the end result is perfect and will look as good, if not better than any shop-bought tote bag.
